How can you distinguish between experiencing stress and anxiety? As an anxiety therapist in Sherman Oaks, I notice the struggles one experiences when dealing with symptoms of anxiety. Whereas stress is a natural human response to certain events and situations, anxiety can significantly disrupt daily life, including the ability to get adequate sleep. Though symptoms of anxiety will vary from person to person, there are some common signs of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). When anxiety becomes persistent, it can be debilitating.
The following are five (5) signs that you may have anxiety:
- Excessive worry – There can be constant and uncontrollable worry in various aspects of life, even when there is minimal or no reason to be concerned.
- Sleep disturbance – Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Sometimes feeling restlessness interferes with a good night’s rest.
- Restlessness – Feeling on edge or keyed up. This experience may manifest as fidgeting, or an inability to sit still.
- Difficulty concentrating – Focusing on tasks or making decisions may be a challenge due to racing thoughts or constant worry.
- Fatigue – Feeling exhausted, tired, or experiencing low energy levels even after getting enough sleep.
Additional physical and behavioral symptoms may also manifest. Physically, individuals may experience a racing heart, sweating, dizziness, or nausea. Behaviorally, avoidance of situations perceived as fearful or dangerous (such as the fear of being trapped) is common, reinforcing the apprehension of similar situations in the future.
In more severe cases, anxiety can lead to panic attacks – sudden and intense episodes of fear or discomfort. These attacks may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and shortness of breath. It’s important to note that panic attacks can be misinterpreted as heart attacks, leading to visits to the Emergency Room. If you suspect you may be dealing with anxiety or related symptoms, seeking professional help is advisable for proper diagnosis and support. An experienced therapist who specializes in anxiety can support you with this.
