What is Confidentiality and Why is it Important?
In therapy, confidentiality refers to the therapist’s legal and ethical obligation to protect information shared in the therapy space. Confidentiality applies to all members of the unit of treatment, whether they are individuals, couples, or families. Confidentiality is a significant and fundamental part of the therapeutic relationship, as it helps build and maintain trust between the client and therapist. In couples therapy, this allows couples to be more open and engaged throughout the therapy process.
“No Secrets” Policy & Triangulation
Many therapists will discuss a “no secrets” policy with their couples. This policy means that any information shared with the therapist, whether by one partner inside or outside of a session, will not be kept hidden from the other partner. In most scenarios, if safety is not a concern, the therapist may encourage the individual who shared the information to bring it up in the next couples therapy session. This is important because it maintains fairness and prevents any form of triangulation, when a third person is pulled into a conflict between the couple, leaving the relationship more divided. If the therapist chooses to keep a secret from another member, there is a risk that trust will be broken and that therapy will not be conducted in an ethical manner. The goal would be to de-triangulate, allowing the couple to communicate clearly and effectively, and take ownership of their own feelings and actions.
Limits to Confidentiality
Your therapist is a mandated reporter. Therefore, confidentiality has its limits, and there may be times when a therapist needs to break confidentiality due to safety concerns or legal requirements.
